Description
Painting on wood flourished during the Safavid period, with notable examples such as Chehel Sotoun Palace in Isfahan and Molla Rostam Mosque in Maragheh.
On the underside of ceilings, supporting beams, and capitals, rich and intricate painted decorations were applied.
Motifs such as large and small medallions (toranj) and intertwined plants are among the main designs used in these structures.
The peak of this art’s use was during the Zand and later the Qajar periods.
These motifs are now utilized in various designs on mirrors and wooden boxes.
